Depicts a man at peace atop a mountain who then descends it, treks across the tundra, and explores a frozen cave. With this cue, my goal was to compose texturally rather than thematically. During the parts on and around the mountain, I used a bed of low strings to convey a sense of scale. Over those drones I used mostly VST instruments which manipulated samples of tangible, organic sounds like singers, water glasses, and chimes to create an icy, windy texture. During the cave section, I leaned more heavily into synthesizers and arpeggiators to create a space that felt more alien and unknown. Because these are stock clips which weren’t actually filmed to create a coherent sequence, the film on its own feels rather disjointed. I decided to create a cue that swells and hits each jump cut, with a descending chord progression to mirror the subject’s descent down the mountain. Perhaps counter-intuitively, I believe hitting each of these cuts with a musical beat diminishes their jarring impact and glues them together. A cue which ebbed and flowed in the background and ignored the massive jump-cuts would have made them feel even more jarring and nonsensical by contrast. On the cut to the cave, I have the organic, windy textures suddenly drop out to demonstrate that we’ve entered a new space. To heighten the impact, I set the reverb on these textures to disappear as well.
